Anthropic has officially announced the global release of Claude Code, a terminal-native AI developer agent designed to execute tasks directly on local systems.
Claude Code operates inside your shell environment, meaning it does not just suggest code—it runs CLI tools, refactors files, analyzes logs, and executes git workflows directly. This brings a major paradigm shift for developer productivity, cutting down context-switching between IDEs and terminal applications.
Core Features of Claude Code
- Interactive Command Execution: Claude can run test suites, check dependencies, and perform builds. The agent waits for user approval before initiating modifying tasks.
- Self-Correction and Debugging: If a test run fails, Claude reads the stack trace, locates the file, corrects the buggy lines, and triggers the test again until it passes.
- Extensive MCP Integration: The tool uses Model Context Protocol (MCP) to access external data servers (PostgreSQL, Figma, Slack) and incorporate live state directly into its reasoning engine.
Getting Started with Claude Code
The CLI is distributed as an npm package and can be initialized using the standard package manager command:
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
claude
Once running, you can speak directly to the agent in natural language, prompting it to perform tasks like "Scan this repository for deprecated functions and replace them with standard calls".
